In 1736 Benjamin Franklin started the first volunteer fire company in America . Some famous volunteer firefighters include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Paul Revere. For 270 years this American tradition has attracted service-oriented men and women who are devoted to their neighbors and the betterment of their communities.
Eastside Fire & Rescue is a partnership of several fire protection districts, each of whom were built from volunteers. As rural areas became suburban, the increase in population demanded additional services, and professional staffing was introduced. Although we do have staffed fire stations in our agency, volunteers do provide first-line support in some of our rural areas, and supporting roles in some of our combination (career & volunteer) stations.
