Physical Testing Procedures

 

Strength and Agility Minimum Requirements - FIREFIGHTER

CLAUSTROPHOBIA: Applicant crawls into a confined space (piping) and performs tasks as assigned. You cannot proceed if you fail.

ACROPHOBIA: Participants must climb a ladder extended to 100' and perform assigned tasks. You cannot proceed if you fail.

BEAM WALK:
Participant stands at one end of a 20-foot beam. Carrying a 25-pound weight, the applicant must continuously walk the length of the beam without falling off.

PULL-UPS: Participant must grasp the chin-up bar with palms facing away from the body. With the arms fully extended, the counting begins as the chin passes the bar. The counting of each chin-up continues until the hands leave the bar.

SQUATS: Participant must perform squats with 90 pounds of weight on their back.

BICEPS CURLS: Participant must perform curls with 60 pounds of weight on the bar.

INCLINE SHOULDER PRESS: Participant must press 60 pounds of weight.

LAT PULLS: Participant must pull 70 pounds in this event.

FLEXIBILITY: While sitting with legs extended, participant must reach and hold their toes.

ABDOMINAL CURL UPS: The participant, lying on the back with knees bent (unsupported) must continuously reach their knees. Measurement is taken as the palms pass the knees. Applicant must do as many reps as possible in one minute.

ONE-MILE RUN: Participant must run a mile for time.



Strength and Agility Minimum Requirements - EMS RESPONDER

To pass this test the application must obtain a minimum score of 150 points and pass the Stretcher Handling test. The Physical Agility test will consist of the following:

Kit Carry and Climb: The candidate must carry two kits (oxygen and jump kits) up and down the stairs in the bay of station 72 six times, one step at a time, without touching the side rails.

Reason: To test leg, back and arm muscles, lungs and general stamina. It simulates activity performed on medical incidents.

Dummy Drag: The candidate must drag a dummy (approximately 150 to 175 pounds) 50 feet. The time shall start after the candidate lifts the dummy and crosses the start line.

Reason: To test leg strength and simulates pulling a patient or a rope in a rescue operation

Running: The candidate must run two laps (just over 1/4 mile) of the marked course around station 72.

Reason: To test leg strength, lungs and general cardiovascular fitness. It simulates getting to the vehicle to go on a medical incident, getting to the patient and getting equipment.

Stretcher Handling:
Candidate must be able to operate the stretcher with a dummy (150 to 175 pounds) over various terrain and situations.

Reason: To test the applicant's strength & ability to handle a stretcher with a partner in a safe manner.
