Future Women in EMS and Fire Workshop - 4/17/23

Woodinville– Over 30 women interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or serving their community as a firefighter or paramedic will attend the ‘Future Women in EMS and Fire’ workshop in Sammamish on April 22 and 23.

The King County Fire Chiefs Association and King County Emergency Medical Services are committed to improving diversity in fire and emergency medical services. Together, along with fire and EMS organizations, are actively recruiting women to join the workforce. The goal of this two-day workshop, which was designed by women for women, is to educate, clarify expectations, and provide support for women in the hiring process.

Workshop participants will spend a weekend exploring the world of fire and EMS, learning CPR and firefighting tasks, watching demonstrations and participating in hands-on training. Participants will hear from women from various agencies around the county during discussion panels.

Workshops are held biannually at designated locations throughout King County. Over 180 women from the region have participated in past workshops, some of whom are now working full-time in this career. The workshop is in high demand with registration filling quickly.

Eastside Fire & Rescue is hosting this spring’s workshop. Women firefighters and paramedics from across King County are educating at the event including representatives from Bellevue FD, Bothell FD, Eastside F&R, KC Dist. 20, KC Medic One, Kirkland FD, Puget Sound RFA, Redmond FD/ NEKCM1, Renton RFA, Seattle FD, Shoreline FD, South King F&R, and Valley RFA.

Media is invited to attend this workshop during the obstacle course and hose drill session. Additionally, media will have the opportunity to try on bunking gear and get a feel for what it’slike to be in a firefighter’s shoes. Several instructors and a current program participant will be available for on-camera interviews.
